# Understanding incidents

> What an incident is and how ARGUS detects one.

An **incident** is a moment ARGUS flags because the activity on your cameras
looks risky and worth your attention. Instead of asking you to watch hours of
live video, ARGUS watches it for you and surfaces only the moments that matter.

## How ARGUS detects an incident

ARGUS analyzes your live camera feeds around the clock and continuously scores
what it sees for how risky it looks. When it becomes confident that something is
a genuine concern, it creates an incident.

A few things shape that decision:

* **Confidence, not a single frame.** ARGUS looks for activity that holds up
  across several moments rather than a single split-second blip. A brief glitch,
  a flicker, or someone walking quickly past a camera won't become an incident on
  its own.
* **Your operating hours provide context.** ARGUS decides an incident is real based
  on what it sees in the video. Separately, activity that happens overnight or
  outside your normal operating hours may be given extra attention.
* **Most activity is normal.** The vast majority of what happens in a store is
  routine and never needs your attention, so it never becomes an incident.

<Note>
  ARGUS isn't a video recorder. Your existing camera system keeps your recordings;
  ARGUS analyzes the live video to spot incidents as they happen. For the full
  camera-to-alert loop, see [How ARGUS works](/get-started/how-argus-works).
</Note>

## What an incident looks like in your dashboard

New incidents appear in the **Incidents** view of your dashboard. Each incident
shows you the essentials at a glance:

* **A risk score** from 0 to 100 that tells you how seriously to take it.
* **Where it happened** — the camera that captured it.
* **When it happened** — the time of the activity.
* **A short summary** of what ARGUS saw.
* **A short clip or snapshot** of what triggered the incident, so you have the
  visual context you need when reviewing.

Click an incident to expand it and review the details, then decide what to do
with it. Higher-risk incidents are also sent to you as alerts so you don't have
to be watching the dashboard to know about them.
